Original Tech Girls Are Superheroes book
Superheroes are iconic role models for leadership and collaboration. We read about them in comic books and we see them on movie screens as everyday people with exceptional powers. They voluntarily sacrifice themselves to use their special power to serve society and the common good.
In the digital world of technology, there are villains and super dangers that we cannot ignore and the implications and consequences of online actions can sometimes become part of real life. Cyberbullying, online violence, and security hacks (to name a few) are ever present threats. With our growing connections through social media, we all need to become savvy about managing our online identities and by helping to educate others to be digitally literate and aware of what their social media footprint is.
We address these challenges and more in this exciting first book in the Tech Girls Are Superheroes series. We hope you enjoy reading the adventures of our mavens - all of whom build and use technology in their real working lives to change the world everyday. The tech girl superheroes featured in this latest adventure book inspire us here at the Tech Girls Movement Foundation, and we are excited to introduce you to superheroes who come from around the world: Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. We know they are excited to meet you, and they are champions for everyone who wants a more inclusive, diverse future for STEM and for our next generation of leaders.
We are busy promoting positive female infotech role models to encourage and raise awareness of technology career options for girls. This book aims to demonstrate to students, teachers and advisors that IT is an exciting, innovative and rewarding career option for women. IT careers can take you anywhere and everywhere. What is your superpower?
About the TechGirl Movement
The Tech Girls Movement was founded on 8 March 2014 (International Women’s Day). Designed to get girls interested and engaged in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). With research saying that girls opt-out of STEM at 6 years of age, mainly in part due to a lack of visible female role models and a lack of understanding of what STEM professionals do.
As the Tech Girls Movement continued to grow the Tech Girls Movement Foundation was formally established in 2016, to ensure proper governance structures were established for our growing not-for-profit. Today we have 10 Board Members, each contributing various industry skills and expertise. We continue to grow our Supporter and Partnerships year after year. We now have a greater reach of our programs throughout regional parts of Australia.
Our Tech Girls are Superheroes books continue to be popular. We have distributed 80,000 free books, placing one in every primary and secondary school in Australia (9966 schools). Our books present real-life women in STEM as superheroes who change the world. Used as a career resource the books use storytelling and strong powerful avatars to counteract the negative STEM stereotypes presented in the media. The inspiring stories showcase to all young girls that they can have a successful and rewarding career in STEM.
All programs created and operated by the Tech Girls Movement Foundation are developed based on over 20 years of research on gender, diversity, STEM, and entrepreneurship.
